The best time to paint a home exterior in Pflugerville is March through May, with a strong secondary window from September through November. Outside those windows, the work is still possible, but the results are not as consistent and the project is harder to schedule.

This guide walks through why the timing matters more in Central Texas than in most of the country, and which months are actually best for your specific project.

Why Timing Matters More in Central Texas

In many parts of the country, exterior paint timing is a matter of convenience. Here, it is a matter of how well the paint cures.

Paint needs a temperature range to cure correctly. For most modern acrylic exterior paints, that range is roughly 50 degrees to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, measured at the wall surface, not in the shade. It also needs surface temperatures to stay within that range for the full curing period, typically 24 to 72 hours after application.

In Central Texas summer, a west facing wall can hit 140 degrees in direct afternoon sun. Paint applied to that surface flashes, dries too fast to level out, and leaves brush marks, roller texture, or thin spots that fail within a year. In winter, early morning surface temperatures can drop below 40 degrees, which prevents proper adhesion.

The windows that work are the months when daytime highs sit in the 60s, 70s, and low 80s, and overnight lows stay above 45. In Pflugerville and Austin, that narrows to spring and fall.

The Ideal Window: March Through May

March through May is the peak exterior painting season for good reason.

Temperatures are ideal. Daytime highs typically sit 65 to 85 degrees. Overnight lows stay above 50. Surface temperatures cure within spec every day of the window.

Humidity is moderate. Spring mornings can carry 70 percent humidity, but it drops through the day. Paint still cures correctly because afternoon temperatures and air movement allow the surface to set before night.

UV is strong but not extreme. March and April UV is enough to help paint film set correctly but not so intense that light colors photobleach or dark colors flash.

The one risk factor in this window is hail. Central Texas gets its heaviest hail from mid March through late May. If a hail storm hits within 24 hours of fresh exterior paint, the finish can pit or dent. Our crews watch the forecast and reschedule around warned weather, which is one reason booking a month or more in advance helps us work with weather flexibility.

The Second Best Window: September Through November

Fall is almost as good as spring for exterior painting, and sometimes better.

The hail risk is much lower. Central Texas hail season mostly wraps up by mid June, and fall hail is rare.

Temperatures are still ideal through November. September can run hot, with highs in the low 90s some years, but daytime surface temperatures are usually manageable by early October. November is often the most comfortable painting month of the year, with consistent 60 to 80 degree days.

Humidity is lower. Fall air is drier than spring air, which helps certain coatings cure faster and more evenly.

The one catch is light. Days are shorter in November, so crews have fewer working hours per day. Large exteriors that would take 3 days in April might take 4 to 5 in November. Pricing stays the same, the timeline just stretches slightly.

Why Summer and Winter Are Risky

June, July, and August are hot enough that exterior painting becomes a morning only activity. Surface temperatures on any east, south, or west facing wall exceed the usable range by 10 or 11 AM.

Some painters still quote summer jobs, but the work quality suffers. Paint applied too hot flashes and leaves a stippled texture. Thin coats from trying to beat the heat lead to coverage issues that only show up at year 2 or 3. We do take summer exterior bookings, but we work north facing walls in the afternoon and shift south and west walls to dawn through 10 AM, which stretches timelines.

December through February has the opposite problem. Overnight lows routinely drop into the 30s and occasionally below freezing. Morning surface temperatures stay below spec until late morning. If a surface never warms above 50 degrees during the curing window, paint does not bond properly, and failure shows within 12 to 18 months.

Winter interior work is year round, see our [interior painting service](/services/interior-painting), but winter exteriors in Pflugerville are reserved for homes where the surface can be warmed by direct sun through the day.

A Month By Month Booking Calendar

Here is how we actually schedule exterior work across the year.

January. Book estimates for spring work. Our calendar for March fills up by late January most years.

February. Interior focus month. Exterior estimates continue for spring bookings. HOA submissions go out for March approvals.

March. Peak exterior season opens. Our crews are fully booked, watch hail forecasts daily.

April. Peak continues. Demand is highest of the year, project starts stretch 3 to 4 weeks from estimate.

May. Last solid spring month. Late May sometimes pushes into early summer heat pattern.

June through August. Exterior is possible but limited to morning hours, extended project timelines. Many crews pause to focus on interior and cabinet work.

September. Fall exterior season opens once daytime highs drop below the low 90s, typically mid September.

October. Peak fall exterior month. Often the best weather of the year.

November. Excellent painting conditions, slightly shorter days. Demand is lower so scheduling is easier.

December. Weather dependent. Warm dry weeks work. Cold or wet weeks pause exterior work.

Book Ahead for Spring
